Style // Underground Report: Meet 22-Year-Old Disco Diva Christina Skaar
Recently, electronic dance music (EDM) has been slowly rising and becoming a more widely known and acceptable genre of music. This genre includes: techno, house, dubstep, electro, and many more. It’s hard to completely blanket this genre, but the main focus in all of the songs is truly the beats. Another aspect is usually the vocals, where generally it consists of breathy and melodic notes and lyrics. Christina Skaar happens to be one of the voices that graces numerous house songs.
Born in Oslo, Norway, Skaar got her start in singing around the age of 3 where she attended various talent competitions. Soon after (age 6), she wrote and recorded her first take. She went on to experiment with different genres as a vocalist, but in high school she discovered studio techniques and music production, which is where she found her passion for house music. She began working with major production companies in Oslo and soon had an extensive discography to show. At the end of the day she states that, “I’ve always loved house music, [be]cause it makes me happy no matter what mood I’m in.”
Now an international artist, she has been featured in songs such as progressive house single “Unleash My Love” and club electro “Freedom”. Skaar has been known to write her own lyrics and form her own melodies. Through her entire career she has also focused on working with well-known and unknown producers with the idea that, “as long as the production is good, that is what’s important.”
In terms of major influences, Skaar credits Whitney Houston, Nadia Ali, Eva Simmons, and Dance Singer. She admires the power in Whitney’s voice, the character in Nadia’s, and the audience engagement Eva and Dance bring. Influence is one thing, but inspiration is what differentiates one artist from another. Skaar says, “What truly inspires me day – to – day is mostly positive and creative people & situations where you need to make hard decisions. Can’t get enough of new experiences, both good & bad. Things that makes you think over & enjoy life!”
For upcoming releases, look forward to the songs “Under Your Hat” and “Lock & Load”, which were produced by two men from Stockholm, Sweden called Brilliant. You can stay updated on new releases and any news on Christina Skaar on her Twitter, Facebook, and SoundCloud.
