Style // What You Need in Your Closet: Eight Wardrobe Essentials

By

I know how ridiculously difficult it can be to look put together with a not so fabulous budget. But that is what mix-and-match is all about, right? No matter what your budget is, there are a few things that you absolutely have to have in order to stay stylish. There are also some essentials that you’ve got to have no matter what. So how do you decide what clothes to spend your money on? Well, here are some suggestions regarding what CK thinks you should always have in your wardrobe.

1. Jeans

It can be so hard to find a pair of jeans that fits perfectly. Trust this: you’ll want to spend a little more, if necessary, on a pair that can be both dressed up and down – so long as it fits perfectly.

Understandably, we don’t always have $100 bills lying around under the mattress to spend on designer jeans. So the question becomes: Where can you score a pair of jeans that a) fit great, b) look great, and c) won’t break the bank? Gap’s 1969 Jeans are a great option. They come in various cuts and sizes, so you should be able to find a pair perfect for you. Plus – they’re super affordable.

2. Tank Tops

Let’s continue on comfy/casual road now, shall we? Tank tops are staple year-round basics. During the summer months, you can wear them alone, styled with cute accessories. And during the winter months, tanks are essentials for layering. You can spice up tank tops with drapes, embellishment, ruffles, lace or prints. Feeling brave? Try this sheer trend.

Tank tops are fairly easy to find in any store, and are super affordable. So shop around to find ones that compliment your personal style.

3. Cardigan

For many reasons, a few classic cardigans are a must have for all wardrobes. Colorful solids, like this one, can brighten up an otherwise-drab outfit. Neutral cardigans are great too. If you want to keep it interesting, try this crocheted cardigan.

4. Tote

Girls need to carry a lot of things besides essentials like wallets and cell phone. Depending on your needs, you might have to lug around a laptop, your phone charger, blotting papers, lipgloss, keys, etc. (I even saw someone carrying a curling iron in their bag!) You will need a bag that is a good quality, the right size, and chic. Whew! You can try a sporty onechic one, or colorful one.

5. Blazer

A blazer is a great way to dress up any kind of outfit. Even if you’re rocking a simple white T-shirt and jeans, a sharp fitted blazer will instantly transform the look and feel of your outfit. Black is, of course, a go-to classic, but don’t be afraid to experiment. Try blazers with color or texture for variations. Also, be sure to read Ellen’s piece on summer blazers!

6. Simple Dress

Dresses, dresses, dresses! There is nothing that makes you feel more feminine and womanly than a cute sundress or hot cocktail dress. It doesn’t have to be super trendy or expensive. A simple design with a twist, a classic black dress with a plunging neckline, or a printed silk shift dress are all great timeless options.

7. Flats

Flats are a must-have for the on-the-go fashionista. Stashing a pair of flats in your tote can’t hurt, in fact – it can take away the hurt. Why? Trekking around for 8 hours a day on 4 inch heels isn’t always comfortable. (For those seasoned pros, we envy you!) Of course, black is a classic staple, but because flat are so simple in design (generally speaking) you can have some fun. Go crazy with colors, prints or embellishments.

8.  Heels

Let’s face it. As great as flats are, nothing gives you confidence boost like a little extra height. Not a heel person? Still learning how to walk in them? No worries. Just slip onto kitten heels, platform, or wedges for more comfort and ease when walking. Pumps are a staple that can be worn with nearly all outfits. The key is to make sure that you buy the right size, and that you feel confident and (somewhat) comfortable!
