CocoKouture: Who or what encouraged you to start Scout 16?
Justin Livingston: I started blogging as a creative outlet for myself. I never truly intended that it would go farther than my own bedroom! Once I started gaining a readership, my online life was turned upside down and I realized I could showcase a lot of my passion and knowledge for style in a new and interesting way!
CK: What is your favorite thing about blogging?
JL: Blogging can be such a relaxing past-time. While it can get hectic at times, especially for those of us pumping out content to our readers, it’s nice to see that you have loyal readers and new faces coming to your site every day.
CK: Who or what influences your personal style?
JL: I’m not influenced too much by trends in the commercial sense. I really look to the streets of NYC to see what the new, cool upcoming “underground trend” will be and – if they mesh well with my personal style – I’m free to test them out!
CK: Describe your personal style in 3 words.
JL: Classic But Quirky
CK: What personal style quirks do you admire most in others?
JL: I love seeing people think outside the box. Having an element of surprise in your outfit keeps those creative juices flowing! For instance, take your classic jersey knit maxi dress, throw on a fedora and cropped tank – and you’ve instantly upgraded from classic comfort to street chic!
CK: What are some fashion items you could never give up?
JL: I couldn’t live without: brogues, leather totes or white v-neck tees!
CK: What are your favorite places to shop in the city?
JL: I love retailers like Barney’s CO-OP, Oak, ODIN, Opening Ceremony, as well as thriftier places like Metropolis in the East Village.
CK: What are some sources of inspiration for your posts?
JL: I try to keep it simple and somewhat thoughtful when choosing my outfits for shooting days. I am constantly running around the City to meetings, drinks or events so it’s very important that my outfit is something versatile but stylish. I really try to dress for the occasion.
CK: Any advice for aspiring fashion bloggers?
JL: Fashion blogging is an important aspect of the industry. Just like magazines, it’s important that you give a fair and unbiased review of an item. Always be positive and only write about things that fit your style. If it doesn’t fit your style or it’s an item you “hate,” don’t write about it – simple as that! Blogging is no overnight success either – it’ll take a lot of hard work to make it big. Pay your dues and you’ll see the brands come calling your name!
CK: Any future plans in fashion?
JL: Yes – lots of projects in the works right now! I’m shooting a few projects for television, along with a number of brand campaigns. But a lot of my focus will be on expanding my site even more: street style, food photography, graphic art and more!
