Sarah Howard took the time to speak with CocoKouture and share some of her insight and tips about the wonderful world of beauty.
CK: What made you decide to start the Beauty Banter blog?
SH: I grew up loving beauty – I was the one that would coerce my friends into letting me do makeovers on them – and there came a point when a girlfriend of mine said that I should post all of my tips and findings onto a blog so that my friends would stop taking up my phone minutes with beauty questions! I thought it was a brilliant idea (and ended up saving me tons of voice minutes). I have my masters in writing so it was really a merging of my two passions.
CK: What do you hope readers will get out of reading Beauty Banter?
SH: I try and offer unique and engaging content that you won’t find anywhere else on the web. I interview tons of artists and women of note. I have an obsession with other people’s makeup bags and product must-haves. I’ve been doing this for years and have exclusively covered everyone from Kourtney Kardashian to Tata Harper to Tracey Cunningham to Lauren Santo Domingo. And then, of course, I am wildly passionate about discovering the next must-have product. When you come to Beauty Banter, you’ll get the chance to learn about other’s makeup and beauty routines, but also learn how to cultivate your own with pro tips and advice that I’ve picked up through my 10 years in the industry.
CK: What makes Beauty Banter different from other beauty blogs?
SH: I try and speak with my audience, not at them. I am just as excited about the new red lipstick or firming face cream as the next girl and it’s this excitement – with a few jokes sprinkled in for good measure – that makes Beauty Banter an intriguing daily read. I also really utilize my relationships to bring awesome exclusive interviews and content. I love, love, LOVE working with makeup artists and hair stylists and learning through their genius.
CK: I see you got an early start in your experience with beauty, what was it like being the daughter of the owner of Pierre Michel?
SH: I actually grew up in LA with my mom but when I’d come to NY and visit, I loved spending the day at the salon getting everything done! And then when my father bought Make Up For Ever, I interned for a summer in product development and that’s when I truly got a taste of the inner workings of the industry: colors, trends, makeup artists – and I fell in beauty love.
CK: Do you have a favorite or go-to look when it comes to makeup?
SH: Beachy hair, glossy lips and smoky eyes. But I always use the brown color spectrum for shadows, not black.
CK: What is one beauty product that you can absolutely not live without?
SH: That’s like asking someone with 10 children to pick their favorite – it’s impossible. I cannot do it!
CK: What are some summer must-haves that your readers should know about?
SH: I’m having a love affair with the Amore Pacific Tinted Treatment Moisturizer. Sanitas Hydrating Mist – it contains hyaluronic acid and it’s refreshing… double score. Cream blushes! Obsessed. I’m loving Illamasqua – they make great colors. I always apply with a blush brush for that coveted airbrush look. And Clinique’s Chubby Sticks are pretty awesome. They are sheer, come in a variety of summery colors and have multiple uses. I just did a cute video on 3 of my favorite ways to wear the chubby stick!
